RISM has a rich history dating back over a century, with roots that can be traced to the early 1900s. Allow us to take you on a mesmerizing journey through the captivating world of magic, from our fascinating origins to our vibrant present.
A Legacy of Enchantment
The Rhode Island Societies of Magicians, affectionately known as RISM, has a magical history that began with the Providence Society of Magicians back in 1908. As we evolved, we had the honor of becoming the first local chapter of the National Conjurers’ Association in 1912, solidifying our commitment to the art of magic.
One of our esteemed founding members was the illustrious C. Foster Fenner, whose name remains synonymous with the world of magic in Rhode Island. Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, in 1887, Fenner’s impact on the magical community was profound.
C. Foster Fenner: A Magical Legacy
Charles Foster Fenner, known as C. Foster Fenner, was not just a magician but a true Renaissance figure. Born into a distinguished lineage, he was related to the Governor of Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War, and you can still find numerous “Fenner Streets” across towns in Rhode Island that honor his family’s legacy.
Fenner’s magical journey began in 1902 when he performed publicly for the first time at the Bell Street Chapel in Providence during a church social event. His talent quickly gained recognition, and he embarked on a career as a professional performer during the vaudeville era, captivating audiences all across the country.
In 1908, Fenner established the Fenner Magical Company right from his home in Providence, and he played a pivotal role in organizing the first local chapter of the National Conjurers’ Association, known as Local No. 2 (with No. 1 being the New York club). Furthermore, he was among the six visionary founders of the Providence Society of Magicians.
Even after retiring from his full-time job as an inspector for the Kennecott Wire and Cable Company in the mid-1950s, Fenner’s dedication to magic continued to shine. He founded the “C. Foster Fenner Junior League Magic Group,” a platform through which he nurtured and mentored young magicians until the mid-1960s, ensuring the perpetuation of the magical arts.
Fenner’s passion for preserving the history of Rhode Island magic was evident in his meticulous scrapbooks, which chronicled the performances of leading magicians who visited our beautiful state.
His enduring legacy also extends to the realm of television, as he made a memorable appearance on Jay Kroll’s “Talk of the Town” TV show on Channel 10 in Providence on January 2, 1962.
Upon his passing in January 1967, C. Foster Fenner was honored as the “Dean” of Rhode Island magicians. Today, the SAM Assembly 26 in Providence, Rhode Island, proudly bears his name as the “C. Foster Fenner Assembly.”
